#NCSAM is an annual campaign held throughout October that focuses on raising awareness about the importance of Cyber Security, highlighting how easy it is for businesses (and individuals) to fall victim to increasingly sophisticated cybercrime in today’s connected world.
NCSAM aims to improve our knowledge of security risks, adopt safe online practices, and boost our overall digital security to help avoid serious damage being wrought on finances, output and reputation.
As you’ll already know, at Comprendo we have a lot of guidance to offer about Cyber Security, but we’ve managed to select 5 practices which we think are the most effective ways to protect both individuals and businesses against security breaches:
- Back Up your critical Data to secure and accessible locations, so you don’t lose your information in the event of a cyber-attack or flood, fire etc.
- Be aware of common cyber threats, such as phishing, malware, and ransomware, and how to recognize and avoid them.
- Update your Software so that your devices, operating systems, and software applications are protected with the latest security patches.
- Use strong and unique Passwords for all your online accounts and consider using a password manager.
- Turn on Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): Use 2FA wherever possible to add an extra layer of security to your accounts.
At Comprendo, we can help with all of these Cyber Security safeguards, such as anti-malware software, password management tools and phishing / security training for your staff.
We also recommend the Cyber Essentials Scheme, which aims to provide protection for all types and sizes of organisations against the most common cyber threats.
How Does It Work?
The Cyber Essentials Scheme examines 5 technical criteria against which businesses are assessed for their IT security defences and offers the opportunity to gain Cyber Essentials Accreditation:
- Firewalls and Routers: a firewall must be in place to protect your internet-connected devices.
- Secure Configuration: avoid unauthorized access by hackers to your systems.
- Software Updates: ensure your applications and critical systems are updated appropriately to spot and rectify weaknesses.
- User Access Control: Limit opportunities for unauthorized access by controlling who has access to sensitive data.
- Malware Protection: Protect your business from viruses and Malware.
Why does your business need Cyber Essentials Accreditation?
- To help protect it against Cyber Attacks
- To reassure customers it takes Cyber Security seriously
- To enable you to bid for certain contracts
